The Rise & Fall Of Tumblr

Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking website founded by David Karp in 2007. The platform allowed users to create their own blogs, share content, and connect with others in a variety of ways. In its early years, Tumblr became popular among artists, photographers, and other creative individuals as a way to share their work and connect with like-minded individuals.

As the platform grew in popularity, it attracted a wider range of users and became a hub for various subcultures and communities. It was particularly popular among the LGBTQ+ community and was known for its strong sense of community and acceptance.

However, in 2013, Yahoo acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion. The acquisition was met with mixed reactions, with some worried about the future of the platform under the ownership of a large corporation. These concerns were further exacerbated when Yahoo announced plans to monetize the platform, leading to an influx of ads and sponsored content.

In 2017, Verizon acquired Yahoo, and with it, Tumblr. This led to further changes to the platform, including a new policy that banned adult content. The policy was met with significant backlash from users, particularly members of the LGBTQ+ community who felt it was a step backwards for the platform’s inclusivity.

As a result of these changes, many users began leaving Tumblr in search of other platforms that better suited their needs. The platform’s user base and engagement began to decline, and it struggled to generate revenue. In 2019, Tumblr was sold to Automattic, the company behind WordPress, but its fortunes did not improve.

Today, Tumblr is a shadow of its former self, with a fraction of the users and engagement it once had. While the platform still exists, it is primarily used by a niche group of users and has failed to regain the mainstream popularity it once had.
